Basketball

RGS students in grades 3-6 may choose to participate in the Santa Fe Independent Youth Basketball Program (SFIYBP).  Smaller schools like ours often combine players from other schools to form teams.  The SFIYBP girls' league takes place in the fall (September-November), while boys' teams play in winter (January-March), with practices typically beginning in December. This program is designed to introduce young students to the fundamentals of the sport while fostering teamwork, discipline, and a love for physical activity. With a focus on basic skills such as dribbling, shooting, and passing, the program encourages participation from all skill levels and aims to build confidence and sportsmanship. Practices are structured to be both educational and fun, with engaging drills and friendly scrimmages that promote a positive and inclusive environment. By providing young athletes with opportunities to learn and grow in a supportive setting, the program lays the groundwork for a lifelong appreciation of basketball and physical fitness.

Swimming

The elementary school swimming program begins in March or April, with practices running after school, one day a week at a local recreation center. RGS invites all students in grades K-6 to participate, provided they can swim the length of the pool. This inclusive approach ensures that every child can engage in the sport and develop their abilities regardless of skill level. With a focus on foundational skills and water safety, the program is designed to accommodate a range of swimming proficiencies, culminating in a city-wide swim meet where every participant can celebrate their progress and achievements. This event highlights individual growth and fosters a sense of community and accomplishment among all young swimmers. The swimming team at RGS is part of our After School Activities Program (ASAP).

Running Teams

The elementary school running teams offer a dynamic experience for young athletes in grades K-6 with a dual-season program featuring cross-country in the fall and track and field in the spring. Practices are held twice weekly, focusing on developing endurance, speed, and teamwork through engaging drills and runs. The team competes in cross-country meets in the fall, navigating varied terrain and challenging distances that build resilience and stamina. As spring arrives, the focus shifts to track events, where students showcase their skills in sprints, relays, and distance races. Each season includes at least one meet, providing athletes with opportunities to compete, track their progress, and celebrate their achievements in a supportive and spirited environment.  The Running team at RGS is part of our After School Activities Program (ASAP).
